A little bit about Conversion Rate Copywriting

And here’s my story…

1. From social scientist…

While at the University of Manchester (UK), I studied social sciences. This basically covered all the ‘ologies’ like psychology, sociology, philosophy and anthropology.

From this I started on my journey to learn what makes people tick — the backbone of good marketing.

2. To photo-journalist in Bolivia…

A strong sense of adventure and a love of writing combined when I found myself working as a journalist for the Bolivian Times (in Bolivia, of course).

Despite the small circulation, as the only English language newspaper in Bolivia (and one of only a handful in the whole of South America), it had a very distinguished readership, from most of the foreign embassies to heads of international businesses based in the country.

Covering issues from the highly volatile coca trade, via interviews with politicians to gig reviews, working at the Bolivian Times helped me develop my research and fact building skills, which I believe today is so vital in copywriting, and form the basis of the Conversion Rate Copywriting service.

During this time I also started travel writing, including creating guides for Octopus Travel on Bolivia and Paraguay.

3. The switch to copywriting…

Upon returning to the UK, I decided I wanted a switch from journalism to marketing.

I spent the next 5 years working as the in house copywriter for an Internet company based in the travel niche.

I transferred my knowledge of human nature, and my fact-finding journalism to the discipline of copywriting, and honed and tweaked my system for creating great results.

It was during this time that as part of a small marketing team, we tripled sales for the company in a year to $9.1million (detailed in the case study).

4. Winning an award for my Copywriting

After my success as a copywriter working in house, I wanted to see how I compared on the wider stage against other copywriters.

I entered into a copywriting competition run by www.copyblogger.com (arguably the biggest copywriting website in the world).

The competition judges were Brian Clark of CopyBlogger, Darren Rowse of ProBlogger and finally Seth Godin, the New York Times best-selling author, consultant and author, and all round hero to most modern marketers.

I won.

5. Offering my services to others

With the great results, and the backing of some of today’s biggest and most respected marketers and copywriters under my belt, I decided to start Conversion Rate Copywriter.

I took what I’d learned through my successes, and boiled my copywriting techniques down into a system that could easily be applied to any business to get results.

Since then, Conversion Rate Copywriting has worked consulting and creating copy for a wide range of companies and industries, from marketing firms, to real estate, to Universities.
